Apple is waiting on Samsung to perfect a next-generation OLED display technology that wraps almost vertically around a phone and essentially makes the sides themselves part of the screen, claims a Chinese leaker. Xiaomi's 2021 concept phone – bearing a striking resemblance to Samsung's rumored technology According to the Weibo-based leaker Instant Digital , the technology is internally described by Samsung as a "full-surround, full-screen display." In the design – unlike a curved so-called "waterfall screen" – the main display remains completely flat, while the OLED panel bends sharply downward at close to a 90-degree angle on all four edges and corners. The idea is that those folded display sections would effectively become the sides of the device and replace the typical metal or plastic frame. Meanwhile, the display wiring and other components usually hidden behind the bezels could also be moved around the edges. The result – in theory – would be an iPhone that looks almost entirely bezel-free when viewed from the front, with the physical black border around the display reduced virtually to nothing. The technology could also reportedly facilitate an iPhone model without conventional mechanical buttons. According to the leaker, Apple has been waiting for Samsung to finalize the technology, but there are still challenges to overcome. These are said to include optical distortion and color shifts around the corners, maintaining the OLED's protective encapsulation through extreme bends, and finding suitable locations for antennas when all sides are covered by the display. Concept design shared by Instant Digital The technology is quite different from the less-extreme " four-sided quad-curved display " that is rumored for Apple's 20th-anniversary iPhone expected in 2027. Indeed, the leaker suggests that the commemorative iPhone 20 model could be an intermediate step toward this more ambitious design. We'll see. Formula 1 coverage on Apple TV is set to be broadcast in Dolby Atmos beginning later this month. Starting with the U.S. Grand Prix weekend on Friday, October 23 in Austin, Texas, Formula 1 coverage on Apple TV will be available in Dolby Atmos on supported devices. Apple says the introduction of Dolby Atmos will create a more immersive presentation designed to put viewers at the center of the race. The Atmos mix will encompass team radio, commentary, engines, on-track battles, and activity in the pit lane. The combination of Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos is intended to capture the full audiovisual intensity of Formula 1 and bring viewers closer to the action, according to Apple. Oliver Schusser – Apple's VP of music, sports, Apple TV and Beats – spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about the new presentation: "If you are a sports fan today, our viewpoint is that the experience is – I'm going to be polite and say not easy. There really has not been a lot of innovation. We went into sports a couple of years back with the intention to make a difference for the customer, and this is a continuation of that journey." "The sound is what makes it emotional; it is the sound that guides you through that and builds the tension," said John Couling, senior VP of entertainment for Dolby Laboratories, speaking to THR . "That is what Dolby Atmos will deliver." The Atmos presentation works on supported Apple devices and compatible Dolby-enabled TVs, soundbars, and home-theater systems. Last October, Apple and Formula 1 announced a five-year partnership including exclusive streaming rights in the U.S. The partnership allows Apple TV to provide comprehensive coverage of Formula 1, including all practice, qualifying, Sprint sessions, and Grands Prix.
